The countertop takes more punishment than any other surface in the house, and it is usually chosen on colour. A kadhai comes off the flame onto it, turmeric and lemon sit on it, a knife works on it several times a day, and water pools around the sink for years.
Before comparing materials, it is worth separating two things people conflate. The countertop is the work surface. The shutter is the cabinet front. What the Surface Actually Has to Survive
Direct heat. Not an oven tray on a trivet, but a cast-iron tawa or a kadhai placed straight down off a burner.
Staining agents used daily — turmeric above all, plus lemon, tamarind, tomato and oil.
Sustained water exposure around the sink and at the joint behind it.
Impact and abrasion from chopping, and from heavy steel vessels being set down.
Cleaning products, applied daily for a decade.
Almost every material handles two or three of these well. None handles all five perfectly, and the honest comparison is about which compromise suits your cooking.

The most common misconception is that engineered quartz outperforms granite on everything because it is engineered. On staining it does, comfortably. On direct heat it does not, because the resin that makes it non-porous is also what limits its heat tolerance. A household that regularly sets a hot kadhai straight onto the counter should either choose granite or commit to using a trivet.
The Details That Decide Satisfaction More Than the Material
Most countertop complaints are not about the material chosen. They are about how it was fabricated and fitted.
Joint placement
Any run longer than a slab needs a joint, and an L-shaped modular kitchen needs one at the corner by definition. Where it falls is a fabrication decision that is rarely discussed and matters for years. A joint through or immediately beside the sink cut-out sits in the wettest part of the kitchen and is the most likely place for a seam to discolour or fail. Ask where the joints will fall before the slab is cut, and push for them away from the sink and the hob.
Edge profile
A sharp square edge looks cleanest and chips most easily, particularly in a household using heavy steel vessels. A small eased or bevelled edge keeps most of the crisp look and survives daily contact considerably better. On a peninsula, where hips and chairs meet the edge constantly, this matters more again.
Sink type
An undermount sink gives a clean wipe-through from counter to bowl and needs a material and support detail that can carry it. A drop-in sink sits on the counter with a visible rim that collects grime along its edge. A sink integrated into a solid-surface top removes the joint entirely. Decide this before the top is templated, because it changes how the cut-out is made.
Overhang and support
A countertop that projects beyond the cabinets — at a breakfast counter, or on a peninsula modular kitchen — needs support proportionate to the overhang and the material. Stone is heavy and unforgiving of an unsupported span. Get the bracket or corbel detail agreed at design stage rather than improvised on site.
Upstand or full dado
A small upstand at the back of the counter closes the joint against the wall and stops water running behind the cabinets. A full tiled dado does the same job over a larger area. Either works; what fails is neither, which leaves an open seam where the counter meets the wall.
Thickness, Weight and What the Cabinets Have to Carry
Stone countertops are heavy, and that weight sits on the cabinets underneath for the life of the kitchen. This is a reason to be unsentimental about carcass quality: a top-grade countertop on a weak core is a poor trade. Thicker slabs are more robust and heavier; thinner slabs are often laid with a built-up front edge to look substantial while reducing weight. Either is fine, but the front-edge detail should be agreed rather than discovered.
When the Countertop Gets Made — and Why It Is Usually Quoted Separately
A countertop is templated against the cabinets after they are installed, not before. That sequence is not a delay; it is what makes the top fit the kitchen that was actually built rather than the one that was drawn. Expect a short gap between cabinet installation and the top being fitted.
It is also why the countertop frequently sits outside a cabinetry quote — and that gap between an expected budget and a final one is one of the most common sources of friction in a kitchen project.
