A kitchen cabinet has two parts, and they do not need the same material. The carcass is the box — the structural body that carries weight, holds the hardware and lives closest to water. The smartest kitchens use different materials for each, matched to the job: a strong, moisture-tough carcass and a smooth, good-looking shutter. Judging a whole kitchen by one material name misses this entirely.

Plywood: The Carcass Standard
For the body of an Indian kitchen, plywood remains the benchmark because it holds screws firmly, carries loaded drawers without sagging and handles moisture better than engineered boards. The grade matters: BWP (boiling waterproof, IS 710) — often called marine ply — is the safest choice for wet zones like the sink and hob units, while BWR (boiling water resistant, IS 303) is a solid general-purpose carcass grade. Lower MR (moisture resistant) grade should stay in genuinely dry areas. Whatever the grade, the edges must be properly sealed with edge-banding — an unsealed cut edge is where moisture sneaks in and the panel starts to fail.
HDHMR: Smooth and Strong for Shutters
HDHMR — high-density high moisture resistant board — is a denser, tougher engineered board than ordinary MDF, with excellent screw-holding and a very smooth, consistent surface that takes laminate and paint beautifully. That makes it a strong choice for shutters and for carcass in drier zones, often at a lower price than marine plywood. Its one limit: it is not as good as BWP plywood against standing water, so under the sink and in floor-touching wet modules, plywood is the safer pick. Sealed edges matter here even more, because the dense core absorbs moisture through any unsealed cut.
MDF and Particle Board: Know the Limits
MDF gives the smoothest surface of all and is excellent for painted, lacquered or CNC-routed shutter fronts — but only in dry zones, because it swells and does not recover once water gets into an exposed edge. It should never be used for a kitchen carcass, especially near the sink. Particle board — essentially wood chips bonded with resin — is the cheapest option and the weakest; it has poor screw-holding and poor moisture resistance, and it has no place in the structural body of a kitchen you plan to keep for years.
